On PS1 I think it was needed because some of the older games didn't work with analogue active.not sure about PS2. BC maybe?

It was fine, I liked to switch to d-pad controls in some games where sticks were awfull

It switches the red light on and off. Something to do as a 10 year old while waiting for the game to load
