It's also to show he is an untrustworthy narrator. Certain details are missed or changed from his perspective like the date that never happened or the number of bullets fired from his gun the first time. Even the ending is open to interpretation...

This was Jokers origin story told by Joker himself, who is a fucking lunatic. In the same way that Heaths Joker in TDK changed his story every time he told someone how he got his scars, I think most if not all the events in the film were fabricated.
