Also, when other people have a better life, you personally have a better life too. You don't even have to have empathy to support this stuff, you just have to not want to actively support other people's misery. All things being equal, people would support this stuff for selfish reasons.

Because even when you don't personally know a single one of the people who benefit from all these things, when more people are happy and healthy and wealthy and educated, the crime rate drops. Suicide drops. There's less contagious disease. The economy is healthier. The natural environment benefits. You're less likely to be a victim of violent crime, property crime, or terrorist attacks. People who vote in the same elections as you are casting their votes with better educations and more awareness of the issues. Your government spends less money on policing and prisons and has more left over to repair pot holes and improve your library or community center. More people are working on cures for whatever diseases you'll eventually develop. I could go on and on.

My insurance is paid for by my employer. I support universal healthcare.

We just had an election in Canada. As a bartender, I have an explicit rule of no politics at the bar. I do however, get to hear views from many people from many positions. I found my wealthiest guests planned on voting for the guy who would put more money in their pockets. I.E Bourgeois tax cuts (energy efficient windows for your mansion, have some money. Investments, bonds, RRSP’s, we’ll give you more money). Low income guests with none of those ‘portfolios’ tend to have little to no comment as they feel they’re fucked and on their own anyways. The ones in the middle tended towards the OP mentality. ‘I’m doing alright, and who can my vote help.’

There are people who understand by using collective wealth to elevate and educate, we all benefit.

Stats Canada should really employ some bartenders. We tend to hear a decent cross section from everyone.
