Survivor bias, tons of companies were founded in garages. Only few were successful, and only a handful as successful as those companies. Plenty caused their owners no end of hardship and bankruptcy. Plus the people involved in starting those companies had the right qualifications (or knowledge more like) and the right friends and ideas at the right time.
Starting a company is hard and most fail, that's why most people take a safe job instead (and are right to do so).
