In the Pixar short film “Bao” (2018), the white woman is first seen dressed a bit immodestly and with heavy makeup, but later is seen dressed modestly and with little makeup. This is meant to juxtapose who the mother saw her as initially vs who she actually was.

It’s as YouTuber VELutke so eloquently put it: “Small detail that may not be intentional, but it seems the white girlfriend has much heavier makeup and trashier clothes in the dream, while in the real world, she looks much more natural and conservatively dressed. It seems like a nice little indication of what the mom feared she would be (‘loose Western woman who will take my son away’) and what she is actually like (‘nice person who genuinely loves her son and also wants to be part of her family.’)

YouTuber Matsuo Tanuki later added, “Agreed. And if we take the ‘dumpling=children’ metaphor further, her daughter-in-law making dumplings perfectly would indicate she will be a marvelous mother to her future grandchildren.”

That was such a beautiful short film. I remember seeing it before the Incredibles 2, and I think it's the first time I thought a Pixar short was better than the film it preceded.

Is this confirmed? Cause I thought it just was a younger version of her son and this lady (like a rebel teenage phase) and later was when they were older.
