Justin Trudeau has vowed that his government will get answers after a plane crash in Iran killed 63 Canadian citizens.

Canada's Prime Minister offered his "deepest condolences" to the families of the victims and promised to ensure "that this crash is thoroughly investigated and that Canadians' questions are answered".

Getting answers from Iran might prove difficult as Canada closed its embassy in Iran in 2012 and suspended diplomatic relations.

It comes after the aircraft carrying 167 passengers crashed moments after it left Imam Khomeini International Airport in Tehran at 6.10am local time (2.40am GMT).

Nine crew members and at least 26 children were also on board the plane, which was bound for the Ukrainian capital Kyiv.

"I join Canadians across the country who are shocked and saddened to see reports that a plane crash outside of Tehran, Iran, has claimed the lives of 176 people, including 63 Canadians," Mr Trudeau said.

"I offer our deepest condolences to those who have lost family, friends, and loved ones in this tragedy.

"Our government will continue to work closely with its international partners to ensure that this crash is thoroughly investigated, and that Canadians' questions are answered."

The Iranian military has disputed suggestions the airliner was brought down by a missile, something Downing Street added there was “no indication” of after the Ukrainian authorities refused to rule out the prospect.

Officials in Iran blamed an engine fire, while the Ukrainian president ordered a criminal investigation into the crash.

Tehran is reportedly refusing to say what will happen to the black boxes which were on board the aircraft.

Canada is urging Canadians to avoid non-essential travel to Iran due to the volatile security situation, but the travel advisory makes no mention of the plane crash.

"There are no words. 176 lives lost. 63 Canadians won't be coming home," Opposition New Democrat leader Jagmeet Singh tweeted.

"These families deserve clear answers, but whatever the case, this is devastating."
