Ricky Gervais didn’t hold back at the 2020 Golden Globes. The comedian with a penchant for causing controversy took shots at Apple, “woke” celebrities, and the notorious pedophile and sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. He even poked fun at Hollywood’s hypocrisy when it came to signing on to projects, noting that “if ISIS started a streaming service, you’d call your agent.”

British comedian Ricky Gervais has cemented something of a reputation for himself as a Golden Globes host. He’s ruthless to the celebs in the room and controversial to a fault. Tonight marked Gervais’s fifth time hosting the show, and he made it clear throughout the performance that it would be his last. With his trademark beer in hand, he kicked off with a joke about how the license plate on his limo was made by embattled celeb Felicity Huffman (while she was in jail for her role in the college admissions scandal). From there, he hit targets as varied as the movie Cats, Leonardo DiCaprio’s penchant for dating younger women — “Even Prince Andrew is like, ‘C’mon mate, you’re nearly fifty something,'” — and the night’s hosts, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Noting that many artists of color were ignored in the nominations this year, Gervais said, “The Hollywood Foreign Press are all very very racist.”

However, Gervais’s most scathing screed happened towards the end of his seven minute long monologue. “Apple roared into the TV game with The Morning Show, a superb drama about the importance of dignity and doing the right thing made by a company that makes sweatshops in China,” Gervais said, before pivoting to the room in general. “So when you say you’re woke, but the companies you work for, I mean unbelievable! Apple, Amazon, Disney…if ISIS started a streaming service, you’d call your agent. ”

Gervais continued: “So if you do win an award tonight, don’t use it as a platform to make a political speech. You’re in no position to lecture the public about anything. You know nothing about the real world. Most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg.”

Gervais also poked fun at his own streaming show, Netflix’s After Life, a show about a man contemplating suicide after the death of his wife. “Spoiler alert: Season 2 is on the way. So he obviously didn’t kill himself. Just like Jeffrey Epstein,” Gervais said. When the crowd gasped, Gervais said, “I know he’s your friend.”

To put it mildly, Gervais decided to go out with a bang.
