I do the same thing or I keep it in my pocket. I think it’s respectful to give someone my attention if they are talking. Because I know my short attention span ass would look every time it lights up.

I put my phone upside down to signal that I’m only putting it on the table for comfort and that I don’t intend to use it.
This habit probably started at work for meetings.
People like this find one motivation for something and think they understand all of human intentions. So pretentious.
