That was a big part of the filming of Lord of the Rings in New Zealand. Everyone in New Zealand knows someone who worked on it. For example I remember they needed to gather every person with a horse for some of the scenes.

They used a lot of Civil War re-enactors for the movie Gettysburg. Those people probably have stricter costuming rules than the costume director.
