Who thought that Cats was actually gonna be a success? Just imagine if you read a news headline that said "Cats, an award winning film." Not in a million years would something like that hit the charts.
On a most basic level, I don’t understand how anyone in Hollywood thought this was a good, viable idea. Source material that was already confusing in its original form and that half of modern audiences won’t understand? Check. A-List Celebrities for no other reason than to give supposed credibility? Check. Some mildly impressive but mostly just horrifying CGI? Check. A movie that literally NOBODY EVER ASKED FOR!!!??? Check. And the Oscar goes to....
