Honestly our history teacher in 10th grade was the basketball coach but he did a good job.... until March Madness rolled around. We didn't do jack shit for most the month of March.
Its true. Source: am a history teacher and a coach.
The reason is because
A: schools are not allowed to hire coaches who aren't also full time teachers at the school.
B: History is one of the least tested subjects, meaning if it's not taught well it barely affects the school's state scores.
Ergo, if you want to hire someone primarily as a coach you have to find a teaching position for them SOMEWHERE. Nobody wants to stick a shitty teacher in a majorly tested subject like ELA, so into the social studies department they go.
In my county I've even seen positions posted as Social Studies Teacher + Coach. The positions already linked. That makes it easier for them to justify hiring someone to be primarily a coach.
I swore up and down I wanted to teach History but not coach anything, and I still got pressured into coaching. 8/
