NGC5905 and NGC5908

140 million light years distant

Yes, I knew these galaxies would be there, but I was still floored by this wonderfully colorful scene. These two demonstrate just how different spiral galaxies can look. Spiral galaxies come in so many shapes and sizes and are always viewed in unique orientations.

The image was captured with a telescope riding on a mount that tracks the sky (moves in a direction exactly opposite the Earth’s spin). So, I am able to take hundreds of pictures, over many nights, with the stars stationary and average them together.

Seeing stuff like this makes me sad I’m going to be dead long before humans fly out and explore these places.
