After years of being dedicated to logging my sleep, I finally have enough data to see how my sleep has changed throughout the years.

I have logged 2,000 nights of sleep through the app: Sleep Cycle. This app monitors the time you fall asleep, wake up, quality of sleep, and total time asleep. I began back in July of 2013 (Junior year of High School) and just passed the 2,000 mark after finishing college.

Source: I monitored my sleep through the app: Sleep Cycle. I shared the data through my iPhone to the Health app. I then exported this data through the app: QS Access, which organizes the sleep data more easily in a .CSV file. This .CSV file was imported into Excel for all the raw data. Some data which isn’t there was due to travel and not bringing my phone to record. This was at most 2 weeks of missed data during the summer months.

Method: The light bars represent the raw data, which fluctuates day to day and during weekends. The dark lines represent a rolling mean and excludes some outliers to show the average sleep during the time. This was accomplished through the TRIMMEAN function in excel.

Some points to note in the data:

1st Graph: demonstrates ‘fall asleep time’ and ‘wake up time’ for each night.

2nd Graph: demonstrates ‘total time asleep’ for each night in hours.

The bars at the top demonstrate the timeframe in my life High School, College (Freshmen, Sophomore, Junior and Senior), and post-grad with a steady job.

Su = Summer (break)

Fa = Fall (semester)

W = Winter (break)

Sp = Spring (semester)

Enjoy the loads of data and my first [OC] post! It was definitely interesting to see how my sleep changed through college. During the summer and winter breaks, I definitely regained sleep and took advantage of sleeping in. In the spring and fall semesters, I took a hit to sleep and went to bed much later.

Please tell me your secrets, no matter how hard I try I can never get more than one night of sleep at a time.

You had quite a sophomore fall semester. Curious what classes/priorities kept you to a much lower sleep average during that period.
