This actually happened. A guy in my class told our history professor that it was about States rights, so the professor said " A state's right to what, sir?"

Always remember that the same politicians that suddenly started talking about states' rights were all for an encroaching federal government forcing free states to spend their resources chasing runaway slaves for the slave states in the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850.
They were also in favour of the Missouri compromise of 1820, which denied states the right to decide for themselves if they wanted to be slave states or not.
