I've worked on a chicken farm similar to this. My parents were under contract to work on one and I would help out when I could. The difference between the photo and the farm I worked on is that the chickens were allowed to "roam" freely in the chicken house. It was still dark and smelled terrible. The reason they keep them in the dark is to stop them from moving around too much and have them sit around all day and eat to fatten then up. There would be occasions where if a chicken didn't eat enough it would eventually get trampled to death by the other bigger chickens. Main job I had was picking up the dead ones and carrying them to a disposal bin.
