Democrats aren't always atheists either. Many democrats are atheists, yes, but for those of us who are religious we're just following what our religious beliefs tell us.
To help people in need, to care for the sick, and to be good people.
EDIT: Because this has come up a few times I should clarify. Being a Christian isn't what makes us good or want to do good things, we want to do good things regardless, our religion just reinforces these beliefs as something greater than ourselves. At least that's my opinion. We wouldn't stop being good if we didn't believe in God.

Actually, the group that gets the most assistance from the government aren't white middle class people. It's big corporations who don't pay taxes.
