This is why I always take good pics and a full video before move in and the day I move out. And I also know my state law. For example in colorado the landlord can not withhold deposit for routine carpet cleaning even if it's written in your lease. If they want to shampoo the carpet after you leave that's on them unless you left major stains. Most charge though and most people dont know they aren't allowed to.

I once had $150 taken out of my deposit for carpet cleaning. My apartment only had hardwood floors.

When I brought it up to the apartment manager he said: "That's just standard language for any cleaning we have to do, and you're being facetious by implying that carpet cleaning means that you necessarily have to have carpets." I had to threaten to take him to small claims court before I got my money back.

I once spent a full 16 hours cleaning my unit from top to bottom it was literally spotless, the lady looked for ANYTHING she could charge me for and ended up dinging me for $250 because I didn’t clean under the stovetop, I cleaned the inside of the stove and the outside but didn’t pull up the stovetop panel and clean underneath which had barely any grime anyways....$250.
