Unearthed Arcana: Fighter, Rogue, and Wizard

Their minds bristling with power, three new subclasses arrive in today’s Unearthed Arcana: the Psychic Warrior for the fighter, the Soulknife for the rogue, and the tradition of Psionics for the wizard.

A survey is also now available on the previous installment of Unearthed Arcana, which presented variant class features for every class in the Player’s Handbook. Please follow the survey link below to let us know what you think about them.

The material in Unearthed Arcana is presented for playtesting and to spark your imagination. These game mechanics are in draft form, usable in your D&D campaign but not refined by final game design. They are not officially part of the game. For these reasons, material in this column is not legal in D&D Adventurers League events.

Thematically it’s really strange to me that a psychic would transcribe their psychic abilities into a spellbook and prepare them the way a wizard does.

I’ve always thought of psionics as being akin to sorcerers—inborn ability that they further develop through training and experience.

I'll refrain from commenting on the psionics debate for a moment, but I'd like to note the awkwardness of the "Unless the saving throw is successful" wording. I'm curious as to why it was phrased that way instead of the usual "On a failure" wording.

It's a small thing in this pile of mind-rending features, but I love that the Psychic Warrior can get another use of Telekinetic Bulwark by using Second Wind. That's a really fun ability interaction and there isn't much like it in 5e.
