I did this in Tennessee because someone kept smashing my mailboxes. I sold the house and came back a couple years later and there were quite a few dents in it.
My grandfather lived in the country and had an ongoing mailbox feud with some vandals. He was a welder, so, like many other stories here, he sunk a thick pipe into concrete and put a reinforced mailbox on top.
One night they heard a bunch of revving, tires squealing, and a loud bang. They drove down their long private driveway to investigate and found tire marks, a truck bumper laying in the road, with a chain wrapped around the mailbox post.
Like the other stories, they never had trouble after that.
