Lindsey Graham Video Praising Joe Biden Resurfaces Amid Ukraine Corruption Probe: 'As Good a Man as God Ever Created'

A video of an emotional Senator Lindsey Graham speaking about his admiration for former Vice President Joe Biden has resurfaced on social media and is gaining attention after the South Carolina Republican kicked off a Ukraine-related probe into the 2020 Democratic candidate.

"If you can't admire Joe Biden as a person there's probably—you got a problem and you need to do some self-evaluation because what's not to like?" a choked-up Graham says during the video, filmed by HuffPo back in 2016 and now shared again on Twitter thousands of times.

Graham then talks about Biden's loss of his son, Beau Biden, to brain cancer. "I called him after Beau died and he basically said, well, Beau was my soul. We talked for a long time," Graham says.

"He came to my ceremony and said some of the most incredibly heartfelt things that anybody could ever say to me. And he's the nicest person I think I've ever met in politics. He is as good a man as God ever created.

"I think he's been dealt a really gut blow. I think he focuses on what he's got to do not what he lost. His heart's been ripped out but he's going to make sure that the other members of his family's well taken care of and he started talking about his grandkids, more worried about them than anything."

As chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Graham on Thursday wrote a letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo requesting documents related to Biden, his son Hunter Biden, and other Obama administration officials and the former Ukranian President Petro Poroshenko.

Graham is pursuing the dubious allegation that while in office Biden pressured Ukraine to fire its Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin to disrupt a corruption investigation into Burisma while his son was on the board.

There was broad support across Western powers for the removal of Shokin back in 2016 because they thought he was not doing enough to root out corruption in Ukrainian society and was too weak in prosecuting it.

Following U.S. policy, Biden threatened to withhold $1 billion in loan guarantees from Ukraine unless Shokin was removed from office, which he was. But some of Biden's opponents, including President Donald Trump, accuse him of acting corruptly to benefit his son.

President Trump is facing impeachment by the House partly because he allegedly pressured Ukraine to open an investigation into Biden to benefit himself personally at the 2020 election.

Trump, who denies any wrongdoing, is accused of withholding military aid from Ukraine and dangling a White House meeting for its President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to get what he wanted.

As well as denying the existence of any quid pro with Ukraine to secure the investigations, Trump claims he was motivated by a genuine concern to probe the corruption allegations against Biden.

But the U.S. Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland undermined this part of Trump's defense during his testimony to the impeachment inquiry on Wednesday.

Sondland testified that he understood that Trump's only expectation was of a public announcement of the investigations, not that they had to be carried out, bolstering the case that the president was seeking foreign interference in the next election for his own personal benefit.

Biden is a leading candidate in the Democratic race for the party's 2020 nomination.
