As a Canadian I had no idea until recently that private prisons existed in the US.

How? How is my small town (under 10,000 citizens) police dept going to afford gas for their MRAP'a and HMMWV's they have taking up parking space at the jail? How is my Sheriff going to keep pulling a six figure salary while policing a county of 70,000? What about the judges? Our courts are so backed up right now that it takes many almost a year to get a trial started. How can we afford to get rid of bail money and the proceeds made from the war on drugs? /s obviously

I feel like America is going through the period the UK was in the late 1700’s. Clearly still the world powerhouse, but clear signs of demise; overflowing prisons, rampant inequality, moneyed interests clearly running the show (East India trading company).

In those days, you could be sentenced to serve many years of hard labor in Australia for petty crimes like stealing bread. But what is dealing drugs today, compared to petty crimes? If you are faced with desperation, would you steal food from a gas station, or sell drugs, given the choice?

It seems like drug dealing is just the modern form of those petty crimes. Yes, it is far more harmful on a social level, but the reasons behind the crime are the same.
