The truth is money doesn't buy happiness but neither does being broke. Money gives you options and resources to help solve or remove problems keeping you from being happy.
I think the better saying is "Money can't prevent sadness." Truth is, for a lot of people, having money and financial freedom will alleviate most of the stresses that are causing unhappiness. It's not guaranteed that you'll be 100% happy with money, though.
