Maybe it's the nostalgia of growing up watching him on Jeopardy and other game shows, but there are so very few hosts like him and the show won't be the same without him.
Even if he didn't have cancer, there would come a time when he wouldn't be able to host anymore (much like Bob Barker several years back). He's had a hell of a run and has left an indelible mark on all of us.
