I only use YouTube's mobile webpage. It works the exact same as the app, but has markedly fewer ads for me (I do have a root-level ad blocker installed).
I don't think I've ever seen a mid-video ad using the mobile page, and of course I don't get any pop-ups about installing the app or upgrading to Premium.

Get the free Youtube Premium Version — YouTube Vanced. Follow their instructions on their website and you should be set.
