In many states, gas taxes (not income tax) were introduced to pay for the roads. There is a tendency to take money from this fund for other things unrelated to roads. I know lots of people (at least in Michigan) that are upset with this situation.
In addition to this, state lottery income is usually intended to help pay for schools (in addition to property taxes). This is always being put into the general fund to pay for things unrelated to education.

I don't have a problem paying taxes. What I do have a problem with is how that money is used.
