Is there a printer company that does not do that shit?

(Is there a firmware hack that repairs this shit?)

Had a fantastic Epson SX620FW MFP that did that earlier this year, and was using third party inks with. Got a security advisory telling me to install an update, did as recommended, and whaddya know... no more third party inks. Had three sets of 4-colour inks I could no longer use.

The Epson replaced my otherwise great, but long-in-the-tooth HP inkjet for the same reason. Unplugged it and ordered a laser printer that day and haven't looked back.

Inkjet printer days are numbered with the way manufacturers are screwing over their customers. Or consumer laws need tightening to make customers aware that the manufacturer will use DRM to force them to use genuine consumables without any contract, and what that will typically cost per 500 sheets or similar.

Inkjet printers are just an asshole design, period. I always tell people to spend a little bit more money and get a laser printer. Lasers are much more durable and you'll save money over the life of the product.
