Jonah Hill and Jeffrey Wright are in talks to join Robert Pattinson in The Batman. Hill is rumored to play a villain that could be either Penguin or Riddler, while Wright would play Commissioner Gordon. The Hollywood Reporter is the first to report this news, and it mentions that talks with Hill are very early on and the two sides may never reach an agreement. Variety says that the film's producers have always wanted Hill for the movie but held off on negotiations until the role of Batman was cast, which has now happened as Pattinson has been confirmed as the next Caped Crusader. Commissioner Gordon has been featured in almost every Batman movie and has previously been played by the likes of J.K. Simmons in Justice League and Gary Oldman in the Dark Knight trilogy. The Hollywood Reporter first reported on Wright's involvement. The Batman is expected to begin filming by late 2019 or early 2020, according to Variety. The movie is set for June 25, 2021, and will be written and directed by Matt Reeves, best known as the filmmaker behind the last two Planet of the Apes movies. Pattinson is the only other cast member confirmed for the film. For what it's worth, Hill already has some Batman experience as he has played opposite Will Arnett's Batman in the LEGO movies as Green Lantern. Not much else is known about The Batman at this time, but it was recently revealed that the upcoming Joker movie has nothing to do with The Batman and retired crusader Christian Bale approves of Pattinson's casting

So will this film be a standalone or will it start a new franchise?

I like Wright, but man I wish they'd kept JK Simmons.
