My mother used to work for the Arizona Memorial Foundation, and would often interact with Japanese donors and tourists/students who visited. It was shocking to her that some (not all, but almost half) would deny that it ever happened until they took the boat out to see the sunken Arizona and then be taken back to the museum to see the footage of the attack.

Edit: wow this is my most upvoted comment ever. I’d like to add that the younger generations are learning about this, it’s mostly the older generations that want to deny it (and I think we see similar notions amongst Americans and what our soldiers/officers/officials have done)

Edit 2: and my first award! Thank you for the silver, kind stranger! This comment has sparked a lot of discussion, and that’s really great. I hope it stays civil and well informed! Aloha to all

What's funny was there was this Japanese trend called manji which was basically just adding that to the end of a sentence and it was a swastika. In Japan, they just thought it was apart of their Buddhist belief (Swastika is simple of peace and marking of the budda which is hella good in their culture, not like Hitlers). When a journalist showed them the two swastikas they couldn't tell the difference.

When she asked if they knew who Hitler was, two Japanese students said "Wasnt he the bad guy in world war 2?" and then an old Japanese man (Was also being interviewed) was asked and he said, "Oh yeah we were allies but we didn't kill 6 million jews". Really proves they aren't taught about their war crimes much in school but rather the older generation teaches them (If they so chose to).

I once saw a Japanese redditor all over a post on r/WW2 posting propaganda about how the rape of Nanjing never really happened. His evidence was some “unbiased” paper written by a reporter who wanted to know the “truth”. So what did he do? Naturally, he only interviewed Japanese soldiers..
