Donald Trump has rarely returned to New York City since becoming president, likely because, despite the fact that he calls the city home, most people who live there can’t stand him. Yet there may be a place that hates him even more, and that’s Washington, DC, where he received a humiliating 4% of the vote in 2016. Unfortunately for Trump, the constraints of the job dictate that he can’t avoid the District as much as he’d probably like, though he does tend to stay within the confines of the White House, rarely venturing outside and risking a run-in with a resident. He has never eaten at a Washington restaurant that isn’t his own, nor has he gone to a sporting event or traditional social gathering like the Kennedy Center Honors. That changed Sunday evening when Trump attended Game 5 of the World Series between the Washington Nationals and Houston Astros, though based on the reception he received from the crowd, he won’t likely be mixing with the locals again anytime soon.

When Trump was announced over the loud speaker after the third inning, the crowd launched into sustained booing that reached, per the local paper, “almost 100 decibels,” the type of disapproval typically reserved for undocumented immigrants and freshman congresswomen at his rallies.

Later, “Lock him up” chants and refrains of “Impeach Trump” echoed throughout the stadium:

During the fifth inning, a large sign supporting impeachment was displayed behind home plate by two Iraq war veterans, which must’ve chafed given Trump’s love of the troops:

Apparently it all became a bit too much for the president—known to whip his base into frenzied chants of “SEND HER BACK” about a U.S. citizen born in Somalia—because he left after the seventh inning, roughly 90 minutes before the game ended.

As of early Monday morning, the president had not yet commented on the game, but the odds are high to pretty high that it won’t be long before he claims the boos were only from “a very small group, probably paid for by Adam Schiff,” and that he was actually extremely warmly received.

There’s been a deliberate and strategic crafting of all of Trump’s public appearances, the majority of which are rallies, crowds of his supporters, etc. for quite sometime now.

It’s oddly comforting to see an actual, normally distributed audience of real people with an honest, albeit negative, reaction.

Very loud. It's not my thing but a lot of people are telling me it was the loudest. I don't know, it probably was. Winning!

Someone in the megathread said it was cathartic. I never realized how primal shouting at the thing causing worldwide discomfort could be especially if you saw it visibly giving a reaction.
