This chart shows the death rate (per 100,000 persons) for the 5 most common accidental causes of death from 1999 in Cook county (IL), which encompasses much of Chicago and is the second most populous county in the country. The top 5 causes of accidental death were selected from the 9 accidental causes listed in the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (ICD-10) list of 113 selected causes of death (codes 114-116 and 118-123 in this list: https://www.resdac.org/sites/resdac.umn.edu/files/113%20ICD-10%20Recodes.txt).

"Accidental poisoning" includes accidental overdoses from drugs and alcohol, as well as exposure to other kinds of noxious chemicals (e.g. pesticides).

Data on the death rates for Cook county come from the Multiple Cause of Death, 1999-2017 dataset from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Made in Python using Plotly.

Self-promotional edit: I will be making more charts that explore the causes of death and other issues around the country. If you want to see charts for your city/county, sign up here: https://inspurious.com/signup.

Obviously the increase in drug overdose deaths will capture the most attention. It also looks like deaths from falls are up over 50%. Is that an indicator of a growing elderly population, or just noise?

I bet the spike is related to fentanyl laced drugs. It’s a huge problem recently, and carries a high risk of death.
