I once lived in old apartment that was undergoing renovations, and when I moved out, the property management company tried to charge me $1200 for missing/damaged fixtures that they hadn’t even installed yet. The biggest slap in the face was seeing a $125 charge for the new handles I had supposedly stolen off all the cabinets and drawers, when in reality I had spent the last 6 weeks of my lease without any door handles at all because the old ones had been removed and nobody ever bothered to replace them.

They blamed it on a record-keeping error and quickly rectified the mistake and returned my security deposit when I called them out on it, but I’m not convinced they weren’t trying to give me the old razzle dazzle all along.

The last place I moved into had "food" in the cabinets.

And by food I mean pet food despite being a no pets building, and corn meal that had been spilled.

After I moved into some apartments I found out the landlord was notorious for not giving back cleaning deposits. When I moved out of those apartments I cleaned everything then asked my landlord for all the receipts from the companies he hired to go in and clean my apartment after me. ( which legally he had to do). I had no problem getting my money back then.
