Remember when we found out that the white walkers could make deals with humans, and that it meant nothing and it was never properly explained what they wanted?

I think they just loved hiking. they wanted to walk all over Westeros and no one would let them get on with it. #justiceforwhitewalkers

Just a reminder that 2D drastically changed the nature of the WWs from the icy faefolk Others in the books, intelligent, beautiful, and cruel, to the icy hive mind demon robots all run by the Night King, a rogue ai created by the CotF to serve as a control unit. This shit, the making deals with craster, the baby turning into an Other, all the things that hinted at intellect and grander purpose came from season 4 or earlier, when GRRM was still heavily involved in the series. It will likely matter in the books, and I believe this served as a way to show us something that we couldn't see in the books due to the third person limited pov structure.

Seriously. It was clearly shown White Walkers were capable of intelligent thought, and yet we didn't learn anything about their motivations?

In the first scene, a White Walker spares a ranger's life for no discernible reason.

They bargained with Craster, to save his life in exchange for his sons.

The Night King in particular appeared to hold a grudge against the Children of the Forest and the Three Eyed Raven.

The White Walkers used the same symbols associated with the Children.

The Night King had similar/the same abilities as Bran in his visions.

The Night King had prior knowledge of Dany's dragon arriving north of The Wall (or maybe not? Maybe he was just extremely opportunistic? The whole Beyond the Wall plot was shit).

All this, and in the end we received nothing about the White Walkers. No ultimate goal, no endgame, no motivations. Just killing machines. What a waste.

Edit: yes it’s fairly obvious why the WW held a grudge against the Children. But they didn’t flesh out the relationship with the 3 eyed raven. And they should’ve gone a little more in depth on the relationship with the Children and the WW origins/early history. Them simply being murder machines is weak AF.
