Sometimes I forget how ancient the Chinese and Japanese cultures are. This is mind boggling. The Byzantine empire still existed when this inn was started. Fascinating

Edit: I live in the US, no functioning establishment is this old here. When I said “mind boggling” I just meant that it’s impossible to imagine all that’s transpired in the world for the span of time this Inn has been standing. I love how someone can express genuine awe / interest at something on the internet and many peoples first instinct is to nitpick semantics.

Fun fact: the typical adopted ‘child’ in Japan is an adult man, specifically to allow businesses to remain managed by the same family name.
