That photo isn't from October 3rd, though, it's from December 31, 1989.

Man, it's been a time. I still think we handled unification rather ok, given the size of the task. And yet, there is still a deep divide between rural east and the rest of Germany. Eastern cities are closer to the west than to the poorer countryside.

For all the young folks out there, exactly one year before this, 3 October 1989, East Germany closed its border with Czechoslovakia to try to prevent East Germans from using that route to escape to West Germany.

Sometimes the world really does change in the blink of an eye.
