I saw code like this all the time from professors when I was studying physics. I remember having a professor derive a recursive algorithm that he decided to just write the function one hundred times in a script, each time checking if the boundary condition was met... The algorithm would've worked perfectly in a recursion or barring that, at least a while loop...
