Semi trucks are required to have an anti-submarine bar on the bottom of the trailer to not kill people.

School buses rear ends sit up at the same height but aren't required one. Or seatbelts, or any other safety or emission equipment of any kind.

Still shouldn't tailgate one.

So I just want to say this because damn I’m getting sick of the drivers on the road while I’m in my bus.

Hi. I’m a college student who drives a school bus because hey, I make 2.5x minimum wage, weekends and holidays off, and I go to school while the kids are at school.

Those motherfuckers do not stop easily. They will not be stopped by your car. If at some point you decide to dive into the engineering of a school bus (which I really do recommend as its fascinating), even the older ones, they are made to stop anything colliding with them before it can get to the kids inside. They have weird speed laws because safety. The flashing red lights and stop signs are there to stop children from being run over because someone wasn’t paying attention.

Yet the number of people who pull out in front of me and my coworkers, blow through our red lights at full speed, and tailgate us on a daily basis is mind boggling. A while back, after already stopped on a residential street picking up a group of 10-13 year olds, a guy in a shitty old coupe drove up, saw me stopped, saw my lights, made eye contact with me, slowed down, then accelerated as fast as he could past me while flipping me off and honking at the kids getting on. A few days later a lady stopped for one of my coworkers, who was ahead of me. I stopped at the same place and gave her a few seconds to go (because I’m aware it sucks to sit through two stops worth of kids). She didn’t move and was furiously texting with her phone held up to her face, so I activated the red lights and let my kids get off. About three seconds after my stop signs deployed, she looked up, saw that my coworker was gone, looked at me, then drove past with her phone still still glued to her nose and steering with her knee.

For gods sake people, think about your own and children’s safety. Put your phone away. Wait ten seconds for a kid to walk up the bus stairs. Even a small accident like this one fucks up everyone’s day. Your car is fucked. I’ve been up since 4:15am and now I probably won’t be home before 7:30pm because now I have to remain at the scene of the accident, transfer my kids to another driver and bus, fill out way too much paperwork, and take a drug test no matter who was at fault. No one wants to think about how fucked everyone’s day is going to be when someone inevitably kills a child because they were in a huge rush to drive thirty feet to the traffic that’s backed up at the stop light.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
