Dude buy a couple sheets of craft foam or EVA foam mats and glue it right on to the metal with some contact cement. Or buy a footboard. Those things have left dents in my shinbones.
Not 100% on your model but mine is adjustable by unclipping the 2 pieces of metal frame down each side and allowing you to shorten the length by 1 inch increments so it doesn't stick out. Have a look-see, maybe you'll get lucky.
