The comments are wild. But personal experience, I learned more from being talked to than beaten. I'd get beaten for shit that wouldn't make sense getting beat over. It stopped me from doing anything. Good or bad. I'm just left with resentment because I see some of my other black friends who were worse in school at times, but never beaten. They have better relationships with their parents, and living their best lives. Even my white friends. Their parents wouldn't beat them, but they weren't typical/cliche white parents that didn't reprimand their kids. They didn't play.. I had to train myself to speak up on things I believed in, and didn't handle conflict well. I'd either let people walk over me, or fight people over trivial matters, because I thought they'd do the same if they disagreed too aggressively. Not always physically, but definitely not in a civil manner.
Me and my mom's relationship is like egg shells, and me and my stepdad's is an open book. He never laid a hand on me and I never disrespected him. My mom used to do that, and my biological dad. I hate my biological dad, and I'm iffy on how I feel about my mom at times. Not all kids who get beat share this sentiment, I'm sure a lot turned out fine..
Beating your kids is an outdated tactic. That's just how I feel. Raise your kids how you see fit. Deal with the results for better or worse.

This idea that you're supposed to love and honor your parents no matter what makes people stay in some toxic relationships with their parents.
