As someone who was in similar waters not long ago, I would agree with what you're doing. I wouldn't have handed over your laptop, but I'm glad ur putting your foot down otherwise.
My policy as an adult that my parents wanted to control was to clearly state my position and stick with it no matter what. Be willing to compromise within reason but you must accept only respect from them. If they refuse to be respectful then they lose their opportunity to negotiate.
I know its weird cause they're your parents. But sometimes we have to be the adult when they refuse to be.
I dont understand why it's so difficult for some to simply say, "I am concerned about you smoking weed, but you're an adult. I know you pay rent and it is legal, but please dont bring that into my home." Then a rational conversation could follow and your child might actually be ok speaking to you about things.
