Plus shitty working conditions, my wife is a teacher and the difference between my working conditions and hers is incredible to me, I have a highschool degree and make 33% more than her and my work life is much easier on top of it
Maybe I can add some insight. Beginning teacher here. After taxes I make about 2,000 dollars a month. Because I optioned for 12 month pay they break up my salary which is 35,000 dollars a year. You can option for 10 month pay but nobody does that. I got to the school house at 6:30 this morning and I just got home (7:00pm) I live 10 minutes from my school. This is my normal schedule, So a solid 12 hour work day. Now I have to work on my “Professional development” by taking classes online to show that I am furthering my understanding of my subject. We have a program that I log these hours into and I have to have a certain number of logged hours by my 5 year mark or I lose my license. Is the summer break nice? Yes of course but there are day spent at the school during those days. And I also have to work a summer job, like many teachers so that I have money to stipend myself through out the year for things I need and to pay bills.

my wife retired early from teaching due to low pay and shitty conditions. I'd prefer she never set foot in a classroom again.
