My dad has been emptying the ink remaining in "empty" ink cartridges. The jars are hold one gallon. This is after one year.

There's a way you can bypass this bullshit. My old Brother printer would refuse to print when one of the color cartridges was spent, even though I only wanted to print black text. On each cartridge there is a little window into which the printer looks to read the ink level. If you put a little tape or a sticker over the window, the printer will always read it as "full" and you can bypass its shitty little "buy more ink" ripoff BS.
