I guess the question here is why are they gathering evidence from a legal event?

It’s not a riot which would be illegal and would require evidence to be gathered.

Edit: to all visitors to this sub and all who haven’t realised that this is a rhetorical question. You must , well in advance, register all protests/marches with local authorities sharing the duration, location and time. So to be clear, the police were not caught off guard as some may be suggesting or being under the impression of.

Probably intelligence received on persons attending said protest are flagged for antisocial/criminal behaviour. Every peaceful protest I’ve know has them. Recording as evidence due to likelihood of an incident.
