Palpatine manipulated a trade dispute behind the scenes as Sidious to get the sitting Chancellor thrown out of office knowing he was a lock to be voted in, then used the trade disputes and other tensions to cause a secession, triggering a massive war where he could weaken his rivals and only real barriers to declaring himself dictator, and once he was in a no-lose position, eliminated those rivals in a staged coup attempt, allowing him to install himself as dictator for life. I don’t know that we want to make comparisons here.
