Sooooo, I work in corrections. And I work on what we call Direct Observation - aka, suicide watch. When we have someone with serious charges who has already tried to hurt themselves in the recent past, we have someone watching them constantly.
While it takes only a few minutes to die from hanging, we're literally sitting outside the cell and we've generally taken away regular clothing and linen items commonly used for hanging. While it's not impossible to hang yourself in jail even during close monitoring (15-30 minutes checks), I have to seriously wonder, professionally, what their suicide watch setup was and if he was actually on it.
