Awww, Wilma! What a great name for a Goldie!

Eleven years ago, my wife surprised me with a border collie mix she got from the humane society. At the time I was vehemently opposed to getting a dog because we were young, and trying to make it on our own as 18 year olds, working long hours in the restaurant industry. I love dogs, but was worried our schedule and our lives just wouldn’t work with the responsibility of a pup. The dog was a couple years old and had been abused by her previous owners. She was sweet, but skiddish. Her name was Wilma.

When she surprised me with the dog I was worried, but deep down I was immediately in love. At first we wanted to change her name, but for some strange reason we decided to watch one of our favorite movies the first night we had her - Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. There’s a scene in that movie where John Candy and Steve Martin are riding on a bus and John Candy starts singing The Flintsones theme song. For those that don’t know, in the end of that scene/song everyone yells out loud, “WILMA!” Well, our sweet new border collie mix jumped up and started wagging her tail right after hearing that. We decided to keep the name.

Many great memories and four kids later, Wilma was the best dog you could ever ask for. She protected our kids... she helped raise our kids and was the rock of our family. Earlier this year in February she unexpectedly got very sick and died in our arms. I miss that beautiful dog every god freakin day, and our family is still in deep mourning from the loss of our protector, companion, and best friend.

What I’m trying to say is, you picked the best name there is! Watch Planes, Trains, and Automobiles one day for us, and hold that dog close.

In the words of our favorite band, “sometimes a dog is as good as any man!”
