I think people think it works like car dealers, cuz I basically have used this strategy when buying or selling vehicles. Go to multiple dealers and get legitimate offers, showing the offers to the other dealers. They typically will try to beat the competition.

However, trying to use this strategy with craigslist type sales is just stupid.

I used to work in a small computer store back in the late 90s. About 45 minutes down the road from us, there was one of those new fangled "big box" electronics stores. We would get people come in and ask, "How much is CD-ROM?" I'd reply, "$100, including installation." "But, Big Box sells the same one from $75!" That's nice. Do they include installation? "No." Well, then?

99% of the time, people would wind up buying from me because not everyone wanted to do their own installs. One time, someone balked at the price, then went to Big Box to buy it, then came back in and said, "Can you install this for me?" Sure, that'll be $60. "What?! You said installation is free!" Yes. Free if you buy it from us, not free if you go somewhere else and buy it then come back to me for install.
