It’s excruciating to have them unbound like this for long. And the last company in China stopped making the special little shoes for bound feet in the 90s, I believe. It’s not too long ago at all.
I know someone who went into rural china about 15 years ago, and met some old women who had bound feet. They were very proud of their feet and considered it a real mark of beauty.
My great-grandmother had bound feet. She passed away a long time ago, but my mother would tell me stories of how they had to wait in line for a public shower and she had to beg others to let her grandmother go in front of them because she couldn’t stand long. Rough times back then. I still remember how shocked I was when I learned that my great-grandmother had bound feet.
