To be fair, the movie makes it clear that Ariel made a terrible deal, when she fails to kiss Eric by sundown. Ursula's plan to manipulate Ariel's naivety was a complete success, and it's only by ramming Ursula with the boat that they're able to undo the poor choice Ariel made.
