Tyrion was fucking awesome until the show writers decided he needed to be dumb to make their plot work. It's like they came up with their ideas and then someone said, "won't Tyrion be able to see through this?" And the writers just answered, "Not anymore."

Agreed, Big Daddy Tywin was the driving force behind the Lannister's power, after him they fell apart remarkably fast.
