So when places upgraded to electric, they'd use the old gas lights and run the wire through the gas pipes.

It's amazing that even way back then, people were reluctant to revolutionary technology

We asked my grandpa what the biggest technological advancement in his lifetime was at his 98th birthday dinner in 2011. Most of us were thinking internet, email, phones, moon landing, etc. Nope. Electricity. He didn't have electricity in his home until he was married. He got a rechargeable battery set for a wedding present. So... for 25ish years of his life, he didn't have lights to turn on at night. His entire education and college. No electricity at home. It fucking blew my mind. Something that literally all of us just kinda assume has always been readily available in our lifetime wasn't that way for some people still living today.
